If your dog does not pass all three checks or if you are in any doubt about their weight, then talk to your vet. For further information about pet obesity visit the RSPCA website at www.rspca.org.uk/pets.

Puppy behaviour

Andrew Forsyth/RSPCA

Regular exercise helps your dog to stay fit, as well as providing mental stimulation.

Puppies are playful animals and enjoy having fun with toys, people and other dogs. They need to be able to behave normally, with regular exercise and plenty of opportunities to walk, run, play outdoors and learn new skills through training. Young puppies use enormous amounts of energy in play, so they also need plenty of time to sleep in their safe space – whether it is an open crate or their bed – where they will be undisturbed by children or the household routine.
